The mystery behind the McCallister family’s income has sparked debate for years
Macaulay Culkin has now shared his take on what Kevin McCallister’s dad might have done for work in Home Alone, shedding new light on a detail fans have argued about for decades.
The question of Peter McCallister’s job has followed the movie for years, mostly because the film never spells out what he does, even though viewers have always been curious about it.
The McCallister home alone raises plenty of eyebrows. The family lives in a huge Winnetka mansion valued today at around $5.5 million, and even when it sold back in 1989, it went for $875,000. It’s clear Peter and Kate were doing more than an average day job to afford all of that.
And that’s without even getting into the fact that the entire family hopped between Paris and Miami for Christmas vacations like it was no big deal.
Since the movies never reveal what Peter or Kate do for work, it makes sense that fans have continued to piece together their own theories year after year.
The most popular theory has long been that Peter has ties to organized crime, which would explain the spacious home, upscale travel plans, and the family’s polished lifestyle.
The idea picked up steam after fans searched for clues in a long-running subreddit thread, pointing to things like the house being an ideal target in a wealthy neighborhood and Peter wearing noticeably expensive clothing in certain scenes.
With the rumor becoming almost legendary at this point, it was only a matter of time before someone from the cast weighed in. Culkin is the most recent actor to be asked about the mystery.
While speaking to the Toronto Sun about his role in season two of Fallout, Culkin suggested two possible careers for Peter and Kate that would bring in a lot of money without involving anything illegal.

“I think his father was a corporate lawyer, that’s how they were able to afford such nice things and live in a nice neighbourhood,” he explained.
“His mother was an interior decorator, that’s why the house was so nice.”
These ideas line up with comments from director Chris Columbus, who previously said he pictured Peter working in advertising and Kate having a career in fashion design.

“Back then, John [Hughes, the writer] and I had a conversation about it, and we decided on what the jobs were,” Columbus said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
He continued by saying: “The father could have, based on John Hughes own experience, worked in advertising, but I don’t remember what the father did.”
Even though he couldn’t recall Peter’s exact job title, Columbus firmly denied that the character had any connection to the criminal underworld.
“Not organised crime — even though there was, at the time, a lot of organised crime in Chicago,” he said.
